Where in Los Angeles, CA can I buy Cake flour and Pastry flour?
Not brands like Swanson that regular markets carry because 1 box is not enough and will last only for 1 day of baking (I like to share with my friends). Not a professional baker but I like to bake and would like to buy in bulk if possible. Cake flour even though a bit pricy at the market I can find but Pastry flour is even harder to look for.
Any ideas where I can buy reasonably priced Puffed Brown Rice?
I want to make this recipe for the 4th of July BBQ I’m going to attend:

Puffed Rice Treats are REALLY good but I don’t like the lack of nutrition of Rice Crispies…
But worse then lack of nutrition? PAYING $5.00 a pound for puffed rice!!!
Does anyone know if Wild Oats Markets sell bulk puffed brown rice? (I’m in Chicago)
Or, if they don’t, do you know of any chain stores that do?? I REALLY don’t want to pay such exorbitant prices as the Safeway’s & Dominick’s charge in their “Organic” isles.
Thanks for ANY info you can provide!!!
Brown Rice Crispy Bar
3 oz puffed brown rice, approx 6 cups
3 tbs flax seed oil, plus extra for the pan
1 tbs orange blossom honey
7 oz mini marshmallows, approx 4 cups
3 oz toasted slivered almonds, approximately 3/4 cup
1 1/2 oz died cranberries, approx 1/3 cup
1 1/2 oz dried cherries, approx 1/3 cup
1 oz dried blueberries, approx 1/3 cup
Lightly coat the inside of a 13x9x2inch metal pan w/ oil & set aside. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F.
Spread the brown puffed rice evenly on a sheet pan. Toast in the oven for 4 minutes, stirring occasionally. While the rice is toasting, prepare the marshmallow mixture.
Place the oil, honey, & marshmallows in a large mixing bowl set over a pot of gently simmering water. Stir until melted, approx 4 to 5 minutes. Once the marshmallows are melted, quickly add the toasted brown rice, almonds, & fruit & stir to combine. Coat your hands with oil & spread the mixture evenly into the pan. Once the mixture has cooled completely, cut into into squares.
In North America, why isn’t surimi called surimi?
You know how there are some silly things that JUST BOTHER YOU? Well, this is one of mine.
I have wondered for years why in North America, as far as I have seen, consumer food markets, with exception of some Asian markets perhaps, never label “surimi” as “surimi” on packages of surimi?? In fact I have many times ordered some surimi displayed at supermarket fish counters and and the employees didn’t know what I was talking about! Yet if you go to a seafood show wholesalers selling surimi identify it as such. “Surimi” is a Japanese word easy to pronounce in the official North American languages of English, Spanish and French, and in most other languages as well, and the product was invented 900 years ago. So why doesn’t the FDA and the equivalent governmental agency in Canada (I’m not sure about Mexico) not require “surimi” on packages (and deli/fish counter trays when sold in bulk) of the stuff?? “Surimi” could be modified by currently used words, like “Imitation Krab Surimi”.
Is “White Pastel Block” same as white chocolate?
I went to Henry’s Farmer’s Market today and I asked the store associate for white chocolate and he pointed me to the bulk item section with a really hard block labeled “white pastel block”. He told me it is the same as white chocolate. I looked at the ingredients and it doesn’t have cocoa butter in it, but it smelled like white chocolate. I bought the block and I’m going to bake something with white chocolate tomorrow. I was wondering should I just treat it as if it is white chocolate? Or does anyone know what it actually is? Thanks!
Where dfo you get bulks of chocolate and caramel?
I am trying to make chocolate and caramel covered pretzel sticks but can’t them in the market. I don’t want to use regular chocolate chips like the ones hershy makes cuz it takes too long. But it’s the this special kind of chip that you use when making chocolate molded lollipops. I have searched in art& craft stores and the food mart (cost too much). I know how to make ‘em just dunno where to buy the stuff to make it.
