Received bulk e-mail with MY address in SENDERS address column. I didn’t send myself the e-mail. What gives?

I just got a bulk e-mail. And in the “SENT FROM” or “SENDER’S” address column it said the e-mail was from a Yahoo e-mail address exactly IDENTICAL to my own Yahoo e-mail address. I never sent myself the e-mail. I checked my “sent” file which has no evidence of this e-mail being sent by me or to me. No one else has access to my computer or my e-mail account or my login code. How did my e-mail address wind-up under the SENDER column? Does this mean someone has hacked into my e-mail account? I have a lot of important information in my e-mail account. Is it now vulnerable to theft? I am really worried. Please, help. Thanks. Jeff

  1. It’s fairly common for Spammers (Bulk Email Senders) to use fake names in the SENT FROM line. (Called Spoofing) This is done to prevent them from easily being picked out by Spam Filters. (Of course this still happens for other reasons)

This has no impact on the safety of your own email. They are just as safe, (or unsafe) as they have always been.

  2. It does not mean that anyone hacked into your e-mail account. It almost certainly means that they sent it from elsewhere but hacked (on their account, not yours) the header information to make it appear to be from your address.
